Envisage Named One of Area’s Fastest-Growing Companies

Bloomington, IN — When the Herald-Times and the Dimension Mill set out to list Bloomington’s fastest-growing companies, Envisage Technologies was near the top of their “Fast 15.”

That was no surprise to Envisage management.

Since 2016, Envisage has grown from 68 to more than 120 employees, and revenue has doubled. The company is committed to ensuring employee success by putting them in the right role and helping them stay healthy and comfortable. This involves, for example, communicating in different ways for introverts and extroverts, providing heathy snacks and beverages daily, and encouraging a work/life balance.

“Healthy people who are happy stay longer and perform better,” says COO Michelle Cole.

The company’s public safety mission also helps draw smart, caring people from all backgrounds. Envisage was founded in 2001 to automate training operations for first responders, law enforcement and the military. Its Acadis training management software leads the industry, serving more than 1.9 million first responders across 9,800 public safety organizations.

Another integral part of Envisage’s business is FirstForward, a free online platform for first responders. FirstForward helps emergency personnel stay safe and ready for duty by providing easy access to hundreds of courses, paperless training records and a tracking system for documenting exposures to harmful substances. It also provides tools for departments to manage training, compliance, policy documents and performance reviews in one system.

“Exposure tracking is critical for protecting the health of first responders and providing documentation for health-related financial benefits if they experience work-related medical issues,” Cole said. “FirstForward makes exposure tracking convenient and secure. We encourage all of the brave professionals who encounter danger keeping others from harm to take this simple step to protect their own life and family.”

Envisage was also selected as a nominee in the Exceptional Employer Award category at the 2019 TechPoint Mira Awards. This category recognizes tech companies that are doing an exceptional job of hiring and developing talent, cultivating workspaces and workplace culture, and deliberately increasing diversity. Nominees were selected by 48 independent subject matter experts who evaluated and ranked the applications.

The Fast 15 project is a partnership between The Herald-Times newspaper and The Dimension Mill, a nonprofit incubator in downtown Bloomington that fosters high-tech startups. The 2019 Fast 15 list was published in the Nov. 10 issue of The Herald-Times.

The idea evolved from The Mill’s strategy of attracting and keeping talent. Bloomington has many outstanding companies, but finding them — particularly for people who are considering moving here — can be a challenge.

“Fast 15 ensures that individuals who want to stay in Bloomington know of all the great opportunities that exist here,” the Dimension Mill website explains. “And for people who want to move here, it’s easier for them to find our companies and know that there are lots of options.”

Envisage has risen to that challenge, welcoming applicants from all walks of life and instituting a unique hiring process, which evaluates technical skills through an “audition” before a round-table interview is scheduled. This gives applicants an opportunity to see if they are a good fit for the job before they go any further, and reduces the risk of implicit bias in the hiring decision.

“We are looking to hire great people who are hard workers. We are willing to invest in those people,” said Heather DeMoss, Executive Vice President of Customer Care & Outreach. “Our goal is to help people find the place where they are passionate about what they do. That’s good for them and good for Envisage.”
